Tui Na is an ancient chinese sysytem combining massage, acupressure and moxibustion (a herb made of mugwort is burned close to the skin to generate energy and eliminate pain.) Based on the system of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) its aim is to energize and restore balance to the associated organ and meridian (energy channel). Tui Na also encorporates Chi Gung and Chi Nei Tsang (energetic and abdomoinal work).
What is particular to tui Na are the wide variety of massage strokes used which produce mechanical stimulation to the soft tissues of the body (muscles fascia, etc.) the effect of which is to strengthen the bodies resistance and eliminate pathogenic factors (those which cause disease).
Chi Gung or energy work is a vital component of Tui Na. Based on a system of postures, exercises and meditations, Chi Gung activates the parasympathetic circuit of the central nervous system. It stimulates the production of neurochemicals which cause the endocrine system to secrete hormones that enhance vitality and boost immunity.
Chi Nei Tsang (internal organ abdominal massage). The navel is the energy centre. It stores, absorbs and regenerates energy. Through gentle manipulation, the organs begin to rejuvinate themselves. Deep tissue massage is applied tothe organs to drive out accumulated toxins, release obstructions and clear blood and energy stagnation. Chi Nei Tsang helps to “wake up” the organs by tapping into each of their individual qualities.
Change is about growth and renewal. The goal of the work is to make space for the body to live comfortably inside its skin.
